SMFPacks Shoutbox Pro 2.2.0 — Gif search is back, and now is a great time to (re)try the shoutbox

If you've been thinking about adding a shoutbox to your forum — or you used ours in the past and moved on — here's why 2.2.0 is worth a look.

We fixed the gif apocalypse, fast

When Google shut down the legacy Tenor API on June 30, gif search broke in shoutboxes and chat tools all over the web — even X and Discord had to scramble. We've already migrated to the Giphy API. Setup takes two minutes: grab a free key at developers.giphy.com and paste it into the settings (step-by-step instructions are shown right next to the field). Your members get their gifs back, and nothing looks broken while you set it up.

That's the short version of a bigger point: this mod is actively maintained. When something breaks upstream, it gets fixed — not abandoned.

What's been shipping lately

- 2.2.0 (July 2026) — Gif search migrated to Giphy, a proper shoutbox icon in the SMF 2.1 admin center, save-confirmation feedback in settings, plus fixes for modal image links and JavaScript errors.
- 2.1.2 (March 2026) — Copy a direct link to any shout message to your clipboard.
- 2.1.1 (February 2026) — Security release: closed an HTML injection vector in shoutbox messages. Shipped within a day.
- 2.1.0 (February 2026) — Reactions for shout messages! Plus more gifs to choose from and better link handling in quotes.
- 2.0.7 (December 2025) — Performance work: smarter session caching to keep things fast on busy forums.
- 2.0 (December 2023) — The big one, if you left before this: revamped UI, attachments in chat, @mentions with alerts, quoting, gallery view for images, relative timestamps, and inline moderation (edit, ban, prune right from the main view).

If you haven't looked in a while, the shoutbox has grown

Reactions, attachments, @mentions with notifications, whispers (private shouts), quoting, gif search, mini avatars, link sharing, image modals — hardened against XSS and HTML injection, with full admin control over permissions, bans, pruning, and per-page display rules.

Compatibility

Works on both SMF 2.0.x and 2.1.x. Installs through the standard Package Manager; upgrades keep your settings and shout history.
