I'm looking at the SMF alerts mod, but I have a couple of concerns.

I'm a PHP developer myself and can see a lot of work has gone into it, clearly, which is why I don't mind paying for it.

My two issues are;

1st: Is there any trial, or "light" version, or even a demo of it available? I don't want to hand over £20 for a mod for a forum platform with only a description of it.

2nd: Once paid for, it still doesn't seem "mine". Does the script (assuming I buy the copyright removed version) call home? Is it locked down? I want the freedom to work on the mod myself, I want to "own" my copy of it, it seems as if the licensing for it means that you still own the code on my server, which I'm not ok with...

Please advise.

1. No demo at the moment; however, you can know by some people: "I highly recommend it to anyone running an SMF forum" in Feedbacks - Page 1 or "Most useful mod ever made for SMF" in Feedbacks - Page 1

2. You can do whatever you want with the mod in your OWN server. You are not allowed to re-distribute the original nor your own modified version based on my code.

I will come out and say it right now, if you only buy one custom mod ever to your site, THIS is the mod to buy.  It bridges the gap of members not being fully aware of things that concern them.  They get notified instantly on content that involves them (that they chose from their profile options, to be alerted on).  

As far as "owning the mod" goes, once you add it to your site you're free to customize it however you like. However you take the risk of rendering the mod useless, or crashing your site, if you make any mistakes.

As it should be understand with "paid MODs" you're purchasing the right to use the mod in anyway you like on your site ... you just don't "own" it in the sense you can resell or release the Mod to whoever.

If you decide to purchase, you'll get access to the support board and see other MODs integration with Alerts not currently available with the default install

As I said in my original post I'm a professional software developer. PHP is my day job, so little chance of me "crashing my site" or otherwise "messing it up". but thanks for your concern.

Of course by buying the mod, I'm not expecting to own the right to redistribute, I was just making sure that once bought, that code is then mine to do with as I please, and the script isn't going to call home to check copyright (providing I buy the copyright removed version).

I'll go for the mod, as it looks very comprehensive.

I noticed you can purchase copyright removal afterwards, so I'm going to buy the cheaper version with the copyright in place, and if I want, I can always pay the extra afterwards.
